About CRAGs
CRAGS, or Carbon Rationing Actions Groups, started in the UK.
This is a way for groups of people to "put their money where their mouth is" by committing to either hitting a carbon target, or paying a penalty. Bonuses are an option too!
Although it would be nice to meet occasionally as a group, this is not a necessity. All you need is to have the time to send one email a month and be concerned about climate change.
What you need to do:
- Fill out a carbon usage spreadsheet once
- Once a month, read your electric and gas meter(s) (or copy from your invoice)
- Once a month, record your vehicle(s) mileage
- If you have travelled by air, calculate your miles
- Send the above info to the group moderator
- Commit to paying your penalty! (or receiving your bonus...)
What the group needs to do:
- Determine an individual target
- Decide the penalty for overshooting ($$/tonne)
- Decide the bonus for beating the target
- Decide how the penalty will be spent
- Decide how to reward beating the target
The moderator will communicate with the group regularly, and both collect and dispense any money.

UPDATE (Feb 5, 2008): An email will be going out to members before the end of February to arrange our first meeting. New members welcome, of course.
